Breast ultrasound is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of breast abnormalities. It is best targeted to a specific clinical problem such as palpable lump or problems with implants.
The patient lies on their back, with the arm of the same side raised above the head on the pillow. The patient may be rolled onto the opposite side to examine the outer aspect of the breast. Breast ultrasound can quickly show simple cysts which carry no risk of cancer, and solid lumps which require further investigations. If required, breast ultrasound helps by guiding biopsy
Breast implants are increasingly common. Ultrasound helps to assess breast implants for integrity, rupture and leakage. We also quickly assess the armpit and chest wall for enlarged lymph nodes at the same time.
